Why counterfeit adult products are a real UAE problem

The UAE intimate-wellness market has an unusually high share of dropshippers and resellers relative to first-tier importers. Most Instagram, TikTok, and marketplace sellers you'll encounter don't hold inventory — they forward orders to Chinese factory suppliers or Pakistani middlemen who ship generic items with brand-name packaging.

The result: a well-known brand like Lelo, We-Vibe, Fun Factory, or Satisfyer can appear in the UAE at a fraction of its retail price. Sometimes it's a real product from a diverted grey-market channel. More often, it's a factory copy with the same silhouette, similar packaging, and completely different materials, motor quality, and battery life.

For most consumer categories, a counterfeit is a mild annoyance. For intimate-wellness products, it's a health issue. Body-safe silicone matters. Motor consistency matters. Charging safety matters. A fake vibrator can smell of unmarked plastic, fail in three weeks, or leach unknown chemicals — none of which are things you want in a product used against skin.

Check 1: retailer transparency

The first signal is not the product — it's the seller. Authentic-goods sellers show themselves. Counterfeit sellers hide.

• Real product photos, not stock images copied from the brand's website. Look for photos taken in a real setting, on real surfaces, with slight lighting variation. Multiple angles from a real photographer suggest inventory. Perfect stock-only imagery suggests dropshipping.
• Product videos where possible. Video is expensive to fake and easy to shoot from real inventory. Sellers with videos of the actual item you're buying almost always hold stock.
• Customer reviews with photos or screenshots — public testimonials, review aggregators (Trustpilot, Google Business), or the seller's own reviews page with images. A seller that has been operating for years should have accumulated visible social proof.
• Physical address or verifiable contact. Not a WhatsApp number in isolation. A real business phone with area code, or a listed contact page.
• Bilingual support (EN + AR in the UAE context). Real UAE operators serve both markets. Dropship pages with only English (or only Chinese-translated Arabic) are red flags.

Check 2: packaging integrity

Even before you order, you can often tell from photos whether the packaging is real:

• Brand-specific holograms and batch codes. Lelo, We-Vibe, Satisfyer, Fun Factory, Womanizer, and other premium brands print serial numbers or hologram stickers you can verify against the brand's authentication tool (search "[brand name] authenticity check").
• Language consistency. A real product from a European brand ships in packaging with EN + a few EU languages. A "European" brand in Arabic-and-Chinese-only packaging is almost certainly a factory reproduction.
• Print quality. Blurred logos, off-shade brand colours, misaligned text on the box — these are printed from downloaded assets rather than the brand's own print files.
• Weight and material feel of the box. Real premium brand boxes are heavier, use magnetic closures or reinforced folds. Cheap laminate boxes are copies.

Check 3: material safety signals

This is the health-critical check. Authentic body-safe products use medical-grade silicone, ABS, or borosilicate glass. Counterfeits often use TPE or PVC that contain plasticisers not safe for prolonged skin contact.

• Smell. Body-safe silicone is neutral or very mildly rubbery. If the product has a chemical, plasticky, or sweet artificial smell, it's not real silicone.
• Feel. Real silicone has a soft, slightly sticky drag when you slide a fingernail across it. TPE and PVC feel oilier, sometimes leave residue on fingers.
• Flame test (only if you're already suspicious, and on a hidden spot): real silicone burns to white ash. TPE and PVC burn to black soot and release acrid smell — that's the phthalate/plasticiser smell.
• Cost floor. Genuine medical-grade silicone at usable quantities costs more than $2/kg raw. Any premium-brand silicone product retailing under 100 AED total is either counterfeit or a heavily damaged/old-stock item.

Check 4: pricing sanity

The single strongest signal for a counterfeit is a price that doesn't match the brand's retail floor.

Premium brands (Lelo, We-Vibe, Womanizer, Fun Factory, Satisfyer Pro line) protect their pricing through authorised distributor agreements. The retail price you'd pay in Germany, UK, US, or KSA is set within a narrow band. If you see a "Lelo Sila" or "We-Vibe Chorus" in the UAE at 30–40% of its US retail, it's almost certainly a factory copy.

The reverse also matters. A no-brand generic factory item priced at premium levels is also suspicious — someone marked it up hoping you'd think the price implies authenticity. Fair pricing for authentic generic-brand products in the UAE tends to sit in the 300–1500 AED range for standard vibrators, dildos, and toys, depending on complexity. Real premium brands sit 1500 AED and up.

A UAE seller pricing 800 AED for something you can identify as a "generic Aliexpress product" is over-priced. A UAE seller pricing 250 AED for a "Lelo" branded item is selling a fake.

Check 5: post-delivery verification

Even after the product arrives, you have 24–72 hours to catch a counterfeit:

• Scan the QR/serial code on the box against the brand's official authenticator (most premium brands have one on their website).
• Compare weight to spec. Brand websites publish product weight. Counterfeits are usually 20–40% lighter because they use less material and cheaper motors.
• Test all functions in the first 24 hours. Full charge cycle, every vibration mode, water-resistance if claimed. Real products work on unboxing. Fakes often reveal themselves within a first-week failure.
• Compare motor sound. Real premium brand motors are engineered for consistent, deep sound. Cheap counterfeit motors have a high-pitched whine, uneven vibration, and rattle at higher speeds.

If any of these fail, a legitimate UAE seller will accept a return or replacement. Retailers who refuse returns on authenticity claims are the ones who knew.
